My original concept for my re-directing The Office focused heavily on the relationship dynamic of the group. I also initially considered exploring the contrast and differences between Michael and Jim's nights.
Taking cues from JJ Abram's magpie approach to directing I plan to use face-on shots for the recurring scenes between Jim and Karen, echoing shots from Teachers (Dir: Otto Bathrust) and Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Dir: Edgar Wright).
I initially planned to show Michael's shifting relationships with other characters through my scene blocking and how their spacing reacted to him.
I now plan to contrast Michael and Jim's nights through the levels of intimacy shown in their personal relationships. Whilst Karen jokes with Jim, I will use close spacing and warm lighting to reflect a romantic mood. I want to try and reflect Abram's technique of moving conversations by frequently having Michael and Jan moving when on screen, giving the idea of a relationship moving towards it's end.
